The first pen in Nicholas Hemingway’s range has been designed not only to be as tactile as possible, but to work like no other pen before it.
Both the Traveller Pen and Writer Pen utilise the natural oils found in the skin to enable the smoothest mechanical function in the open/close mechanism of the stainless steel pen and its aluminium sleeve.
This unique tactile relationship between the user and the pen itself create a perfect harmony.
Luxury handmade pens and mechanical pencils are wonderful items of stationery but have you ever wondered when and where the history of pen making began? Let’s dive into the past, starting with the 19th century when Birmingham, UK, was basically the pen-making capital of the world. Imagine a city buzzing with around 100 pen companies and thousands of people, mostly women, working hard to create pens that people everywhere would use. These companies didn’t just help the local economy—they made writing tools that improved literacy across the globe. At one point, Birmingham produced about three-quarters of all the pens in the world?. Pretty impressive, right?
Before Birmingham took over, people used quills and reed pens, which were usable but far from perfect because they broke easily. Enter John Mitchell in the 1820s, who figured out how to mass-produce steel pen nibs. These nibs were tougher and lasted longer, making them incredibly popular throughout the mid-nineteenth century. This innovation was a game-changer for writing and education?.
Fast forward to today and meet Nicholas Hemingway. Inspired by his family’s legacy of engineering, craftsmanship and the importance of writing and education when it comes to literacy, Nicholas wanted to create something special. He started his company to make luxurious, handmade pens and mechanical pencils. He began the company using his grandfather’s old lathe from the 1970s, he carefully hand-turned and polished each pen in the beginning and to this day he works closely with his small team hand-finishing all of his pens and pencils with his named attached. These aren’t just pens—they’re unique pieces of art meant to last for generations.
