Customer Reviews

Just recieved my personalised titanium mechanical pencil and is absolutely stunning. The pencil is lightweight which is what I wanted as I'm an artist and for me lightweight is better than some other very heavy mechanical pencils you find online. Nicholas Hemingway's handmade pencils are a work of art. I also purchased the 5100 year old bog oak and had that engraved with my Grandads name as he was an artist too. I have seen so many mechanical pencils online that are cheap looking or mass produced in china, whereas these are hand made in the UK by a professional craftsman. Thankyou Nicholas for your exquisite work... I love them!!

What can I say... Nicholas Hemingway a master craftsman. Just recieved my bog oak wood with an engraving of my late Grandads name who was an artist. It looks absolutely beautiful and looks even better than the photos. I am an artist that was looking for a quality mechanical pencil, there are so many on the Internet, mass produced and a lot of them look cheap and more than likely made in China. These are very high quality and so glad I chose Nicholas Hemingways craftsmanship!

I’m very happy that I discovered this pencil online. It writes smoothly, has a slim profile similar to a traditional wooden pencil, and looks beautiful. The click mechanism isn’t the strongest, but it doesn’t take away from the overall quality of the pencil. And lastly, the feeling!!! TITANIUM in my HAND!! and write!!! Also beautiful!!! Its gooooood

How splendiferous, brilliant and sublime this very grateful mechanical pencil is!!! It's my treasure!!!! Thank you very much!!!!!

Just what I was looking for - a fine brass pencil with a suitable classy look. Friendly service and free shipping was a huge plus!

There are so many brass hex pencils. Here is another. It depends on how discerning one is. This pencil is perfectly proportioned. To my mind, most others are not. The craftsmanship on this pencil is superb; I have not found this quality in less expensive variants. The weight-feel is just right. The lead-advancing mechanism is smooth as silk. And the pencil writes beautifully. So it actually is not just another brass hex pencil--if these attributes matter to you. If the price raises an eyebrow, you may be in the wrong place. Many lower-cost variants of this pencil are available. If what you seek is the best example of a thing, however, here it is.

Beautiful craftsmanship. It looks and feels so perfectly balanced. Weight, length and diameter fits well for me. I enjoy sketching with it. The look is really unique.

Excellent pencil and brilliant weight which makes this pencil so easy to use. Cannot wait until it starts to develop a brilliant patina. My fourth NH writing instrument and certainly not the last!I would like to see the NH signature as well as the lead width engraved on the pencil. Also, remember that Signed for (the service used to post my item) only insures up to £20 now so much better to use Tracked for my peace of mind as it is insured up to £150.

A wonderful addition to my collection of Hemiwear pens and pencils - difficult to stop at one! They are well balanced and a delight to write with

With the Brass Hex Mechanical Pencil I believe Nicholas Hemingway has reached the pinnacle of the pencil maker's art. It is quite simply the best there is out there; and I have tried them all.

Hello Josh, Thank you for your lovely reviews! I just wanted to add that the slimline pencil nib can usually be removed - in case of a lead clog - and can then be screwed back on, it's just that yours was faulty. You should have received your replacement by now I hope. Thank you again for your support!

Loving wood as a material this is an unusual pencil with all of the care and precision and beauty Nichalas gives to all his products. A real treat to have.

Slim and beautiful - takes the ordinary pencil to something very special a pleasure to own and use.

I got a set of these in the Kickstarter campaign. As all Nicholas's pencils are, these are beautifully well made, but they they add to that a reminder of the wonder and mysteries of our distant past that make them truly special to own and use. A little wider than the other wood bodied pens I think, they will suit well those who prefer a broader pencil, but they are as beautifully made as all Nicholas's pencils are.

Amongst pencils that are usually just workshop tools this pencil stands out as something special, both to see and hold. I don't know how he does it. It reminds me of the value of pure simplicity and precision. You know you have something special with this right from the start.

The original version seemed like the best of mechanical pencils you can get, but these add a quality of simple beauty.

I sometimes pick up this pen just for the pleasure of the feel and look of these beautiful pens - they make you want to write just for the satisfaction of using them. The unusual design makes them both robust for daily use and the rigours of travel. The brass trim adds an extra touch of style.

This product was of the utmost quality, fantastic look and feel and from a usability is extremely well balanced. One of my many Hemingway pencils in my collection.

I'm genuinely surprised that i didn't discover this pencil, and is slimmer than i expected it to be. Just like the other pencil offerings, the eraser is refillable with pentel z2-1n, and not recommended to try and use a staedtler 92r(or similar size eraser), or you get a jammed mechanism like i sadly did, though in my experience, nicholas will make it right. The pencil, while slim, does make me feel like i'm using a wooden pencil in form factor, which isn't bad, especially when the closest equivalent, the kaweco sport, is shorter and thicker by quite a bit, and most likely heavier. While I recommend any pencil nicholas makes, I would probably advise someone to start with this pencil, which is fitting since it's nicholas' first pencil, to my knowledge.

While starting my journey into mechanical pencils, I wondered why all the slim pencil options were available in 0.5mm or less diameter, while my preferred length is .7. That, alongside my paternal british heritage, lead me to look beyond store brands such as zebra or others, and when i saw the slimline, it checked all my boxes. The eraser is refillable using the pentel z2-1n eraser, for those who wish to refill the eraser instead of using a eraser pen or block eraser(without judgement, i do all three), however a staedtler 92r will get stuck in the mechanism if you try to put one in(didn't do it with my slimline, i did with my handmade, i am thankful nicholas is sending me a replacement handmade pencil/the mechanism for it to replace the jammed one), the only other problem, apparently hasn't happened to anyone else according to nicholas, is that while the tip is removable, it cannot be reattached(which i accidentally discovered). That is the reason the review is a 4 star, though that is not a negative towards the pencil, just that i discovered some unintended features, otherwise it's a easy 5 star review.

This pencil is ideal for those who prefer a sleeker design than the handmade(what i like to call "mark one") brass pencil. Just like the brass hex, slimline and mark one, this pencil is compatible with pentel's z2-1n eraser, and would strongly recommend against trying to use a staedtler 92r eraser(to be clear, this is not a knock on the pencil or NH in any way, just wanted to point it out incase someone tries that and gets it stuck). All in all, a pretty good pencil, up there with brands like spoke, just like the other pencils nicholas offers, which all have different form factors.

This pencil is pretty unique, perhaps the only hexagonal brass pencil of it's size that exists. Performs very well and is compatible with the pentel z2-1n eraser, however i suggest you do not try to put a staedtler 92r eraser in there.

Very convenient and very beautiful pencils for drawing and writing. Has quickly become my favorite. Thank you Nicholas!

The most beautiful writing instrument I have ever owned.

I love this pencil. It has a great feel in your hand, looks sleek and writes beautifully. I’ve had it for about 4 years I believe, and it’s still pretty much in great condition. I took one star because the button at the end got broken relatively fast, but at least I can but a new one, which is something I like in pencils, buying parts that break instead of a new pencil. Overall, very satisfied!

The Nicholas Hemingway 5,100-Year-Old Bog Oak Mechanical Pencil is a truly unique addition to my collection and the second pencil I’ve bought from them. Made from ancient English bog oak, it feels like holding a piece of history in your hand. The dark, dense wood combined with elegant brass fittings makes it both stylish and functional. Using it daily is a joy. Just like with my first purchase, the customer service was superb and personal, making the whole experience even better.David Knaggs.

The Nicholas Hemingway Handmade Mark II Brass Mechanical Pencil is a delight for any writing enthusiast. The pencil’s solid brass construction not only gives it a substantial, balanced feel in hand but also exudes a classic, timeless aesthetic. Its design makes it an inviting tool that compels you to create and work with it daily. Furthermore, the customer service provided by Nicholas Hemingway is superb and personal, enhancing the overall experience and ensuring satisfaction with every purchase.David Knaggs

An absolutely beautiful crafted mechanical pencil. Size and weight is excellent and feels wonderful to draw and sketch with. I purchased the 0.7mm size and I adore it.

Very good quality pencil. Comes in a nice package with a case. I chose a gift for my boss and he really liked it.

A fantastic pencil, got it as part of the kickstarter campaign and use it nearly everyday as a work pencil. It’s always in my work bag. The quality is super and the integrated sharpener saves carrying another thing.

There is something very tactile about this pencil that makes me write much more. A beautiful object, and machined so finely it took me a number of days before I realised that the tip could be unscrewed.

If you love timeless quality, design and a superior product this pen is for you. I like to treat myself to a small luxury now and then. This fits the bill.

I have bought several pens from Nicholas over the years. They are the best both functionally and ergonomically. I carry the writer’s pen with me everywhere I go.

When this pencil came out, I had to order it due to its gorgeous look. I have bought Hemingway pencils before (normally via Kickstarter) and they are always excellent quality. Nice weight, good lines when you draw, it will last for you (I have had other pencils from here for years!). Don't be afraid to buy. It is beautiful and unique.

This is such a beauty.

This is my favorite pencil and I own quite a few. Weight, dimensions and feel is just spot on. Well built and good looking.

Will last a lifetime. My 14 year old niece already asked if she could inherit it! I'm not quite there yet. It is weighted perfectly, feels extremely smooth, and looks gorgeous too. I'm not sure what else you could want.

This is my second pencil from Nicholas Hemingway. It's the most beautiful pencil to sketch with. It feels really luxurious and get comments on it all of the time. It's worth every single penny.

Excelent service from Nicholas. The Mech Pencil is very well crafted and a joy to use. Can’t wait for my next one. Thanks!

This is where it started for me. First time I ran a stick of Pentel H into this, I felt like the problem of the perfect desk pencil had pretty much been solved. ¶ I have billions of mechanical pencils; this is one of the very small number that cannot be put away. Cannot.

24g of perfect. Does your heart good to even look at it. For what it's worth I'll mention: the synergy is really good with Tombow 2H graphite. Mine's 0.9 mm.

Two things keep this from being perfect, from my point of view. (1) I wish it were rather heavier. Mine's 10g. I wish it were twice that. (2) I wish away the signature on the barrel. Part of my love of this brand is the austere plainness of the products; the sig interferes with that aesthetic. ¶ It's still a great instrument, and the price is excellent.

I purchased my pencil over a year ago and it is still working beautifully. The pencil has a nice, smooth finish so you can be sure this pencil is absolute quality. Thankyou. 5 stars

The pencil is wonderful, fantastically balanced with a perfect center of gravity, and the grooves that reveal its handcrafted creation give it a unique touch.

A Spectacular pencil - in with the likes of IJ Instruments, Spoke, Wingback, and Modern Fuel. This pencil, for the price it is being sold at, is, in my opinion, one of the best pencils for the money (if you are interested in high-end mechanical pencils). The machining is solid, tolerances are spectacular. If you have 100 dollars to throw at a pencil, I would absolutely rank this one well above the likes of Modern Fuel and Spoke, which are some pencils within this closer price range.

A wonderful pencil! I bought it a few years ago when I was studying architecture and it's still my absolute favorite to this day. It still works without any problems, even though I use it every day. A pen that I will keep and treasure for the rest of my life.

Having a 5100 years old real wood mechanic pencil in your hand is absolutely invaluable feeling. I am greatly appreciated. 5100 years is too long according to a regular human being lifespan . Great feeling. Thanks a lot.

I've had my mechanical pencil for about 6 years now and has stood the test of time. The complements I get are humbling and I am grateful to have such an amazing handcrafted piece.

How fantabulous, glorious and resplendent this very wonderful mechanical pencil is!!! Thank you very much!!!!!

Beautiful minimalist design. The weight is just right, and it sits in your hand perfectly. This was actually a replacement for one that went AWOL in the house. A sticky-fingered visitor? It is *that* tempting. 😉
