Pencil Lead Art on Instagram
Mechanical pencils and automatic pencils are favoured by certain artists on Instagram.
When it comes to detail, a mechanical pencil or propelling pencil as they are sometimes called is a great way to ensure constant line thickness when sketching. The beauty of a propelling pencil is that it never needs sharpening and with constant twisting while sketching, an artist can achieve an edge on the fine lead point that delivers a consistent point with which to draw with.
What is the difference between an automatic pencil and a propelling pencil?
The surprising thing you may learn from this is that there is no difference between an automatic pencil and a propelling pencil. Although it may be important to point out that some people associate an automatic pencil with propelling pencils that deliver the lead automatically as you draw on the paper, negating the need to click the propelling pencil lead to extend the lead. This said though, I guess in the truest sense of the name given, these automatic feeding pencils should be called automatic pencils, but because of their lesser known existence automatic pencils are plain and simply referred to as propelling pencils or mechanical pencils.
What is the difference between a propelling pencil and a mechanical pencil?
These I believe are the same pencil type but called mechanical pencils in the US and propelling pencils are so called because they were coined as so in the UK. With the US market being a lot bigger than the UK pencil market and so therefore the term mechanical pencil has been adopted by a wider audience worldwide.
