Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil – Handmade in Britain
Lighter by design. Beautifully balanced. Handmade to be enjoyed.
There is something immensely satisfying about a beautifully made mechanical pencil. The cool touch of metal, the quiet precision of graphite meeting paper and the reassuring feeling of an instrument that has been thoughtfully designed and carefully made.
A good pencil should feel effortless in the hand, almost instinctive, becoming an extension of the fingers rather than simply something held between them.
Introducing the Nicholas Hemingway Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil. Weighing just 14 grams, this refined writing instrument is a lighter interpretation of our established titanium mechanical pencil, designed for those who appreciate understated elegance, exceptional materials and the enduring pleasure of writing and drawing by hand.
Handmade in Britain, it combines the remarkable qualities of titanium with a small but significant piece of thoughtful engineering: a lightweight aluminium nib collar in place of the traditional brass component.
The result is a pencil approximately 15% lighter than our standard 16.5 g titanium model, without abandoning the reassuring character of a beautifully made metal writing instrument.
No unnecessary decoration. No complicated styling. Just considered design, carefully selected materials and the quiet confidence of something made properly.

A Lighter Titanium Mechanical Pencil – The Difference Is in the Detail
Sometimes the most meaningful improvements in design come not from adding something, but from reconsidering what is already there.
Our original titanium mechanical pencils have always been admired for their simplicity, robust construction and satisfying feel in the hand. However, we wanted to explore whether we could make an already lightweight writing instrument feel even more effortless to use.
The answer lay in a surprisingly small component.
In our standard titanium mechanical pencils, the precision nib is secured by a brass collar. Brass is a wonderful engineering material, valued for its machinability, durability and reassuring weight. But weight is not always an advantage, particularly in an instrument intended to be held and used for extended periods.
For this new design, we replaced that brass collar with one individually made from lightweight aluminium.
Aluminium is significantly less dense than brass, allowing us to retain the essential function of the component while reducing the overall weight of the pencil.
The difference is just 2.5 grams.
On paper, that might not seem particularly dramatic. In the hand, however, the reduction is surprisingly noticeable.
At just 14 grams compared with the original 16.5 grams, the Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil feels more delicate, responsive and agile between the fingers.
It is a subtle change that illustrates something we have always believed about good design: sometimes the smallest engineering decisions make the greatest difference to the experience of using an object.
The Remarkable Qualities of Titanium
Titanium is an extraordinary material.
Widely valued in aerospace engineering, precision manufacturing and other demanding applications, it combines exceptional strength relative to its weight with impressive corrosion resistance and natural durability.
These qualities also make it a particularly appealing material for a premium mechanical pencil.
Unlike heavier brass or stainless steel writing instruments, a titanium mechanical pencil offers the tactile satisfaction of solid metal without an unnecessarily heavy body.
Its naturally understated, silvery-grey appearance is equally appealing. There is an honesty to titanium that suits our approach to design. It does not need elaborate ornamentation or a decorative finish to justify its presence.
The material speaks for itself.
By combining a titanium barrel with a carefully engineered aluminium nib collar, we have created a lightweight metal mechanical pencil that retains the essential character of titanium while reducing the amount of weight carried in the hand.
The result is an elegant, minimalist writing instrument that feels every bit as considered as it looks.
Just 14 Grams – A Small Difference You Can Feel
The relationship between weight, balance and comfort is fundamental to the pleasure of using a writing instrument.
A pencil that is excessively heavy can feel tiring over longer periods, while one that is poorly balanced may require constant adjustment between the fingers.
With this Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil, our intention was not to pursue lightness at any cost, but to refine the experience of holding and using a pencil that was already beautifully simple.
The 2.5 g reduction represents approximately 15% of the original pencil’s overall weight.
It is not a dramatic transformation in engineering terms, but it is a meaningful refinement in the way the instrument feels.
For anyone who enjoys regular handwriting, journaling, technical drawing or sketching, a lighter mechanical pencil can be a particularly appealing choice.
The slim titanium body sits naturally between the fingers, while the reduced overall weight gives the pencil a pleasingly effortless character.
It is the sort of subtle distinction that becomes more apparent through use than through specification alone.
And that, ultimately, is where good design should prove itself.
Handmade in Britain. Not Mass-Produced.
In an age when so many everyday objects are manufactured in enormous quantities, there is something especially satisfying about an instrument that has been individually made by hand.
Every Nicholas Hemingway mechanical pencil begins with a belief that traditional craftsmanship, good engineering and thoughtful design still matter.
Rather than relying on the impersonal repetition of mass production, our writing instruments are individually hand-turned and finished using traditional engineering techniques.
Each pencil is made in Britain by designer Nicholas Hemingway, carrying forward a family appreciation of practical engineering, making and craftsmanship.
The work is deliberate. The details matter.
From the slender cylindrical barrel to the relationship between the titanium body and its precisely made components, each element has been considered for its purpose and contribution to the finished instrument.
The aluminium collar of this new lightweight model is a perfect example.
It is a small, largely unassuming part, yet changing its material produces a tangible improvement in the character of the pencil.
This is the kind of engineering that interests us most: simple, purposeful and quietly effective.
The result is not simply another metal mechanical pencil.
It is a small piece of British engineering, handmade with care and intended to be enjoyed for years to come.
A Precision Mechanical Pencil for Writing, Drawing and Sketching
Whether you are an architect developing an idea, an engineer working through a technical drawing, an artist exploring a composition or someone who simply enjoys putting pencil to paper, the instrument you choose becomes part of your creative process.
A well-designed mechanical pencil should never distract from that process.
The Nicholas Hemingway Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil has been conceived with this relationship in mind.
Its simple cylindrical form offers an uncomplicated connection between hand and paper. The solid metal construction provides a reassuring tactile quality, while the lightweight titanium body and aluminium collar make it particularly appealing for regular writing and drawing.
For designers and draughtsmen, a mechanical pencil offers the convenience of a consistent graphite line width without the interruption of sharpening.
For writers, journal keepers and stationery enthusiasts, it offers something equally important: the simple satisfaction of using a beautiful tool.
From a brief note at your desk to the first lines of a new illustration, this is a pencil designed to find its place in everyday life.
Minimalist Design. Timeless Appeal.
Good design rarely needs to announce itself.
There is a quiet beauty in an object that has been reduced to its essential elements, where proportion, material and function are allowed to speak for themselves.
This philosophy is at the heart of the Nicholas Hemingway collection.
The Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil follows a deliberately restrained aesthetic. Its slender cylindrical silhouette, elegant metal finish and uncomplicated geometry give it a timeless quality that feels equally appropriate on an architect’s drawing board, in an artist’s studio or beside a favourite notebook.
It is modern without being fashionable, refined without being ostentatious.
And while the pencil may be lighter than its predecessor, nothing about its appearance needs to shout about the change.
The improvement is there to be felt, not simply seen.
A modest engineering refinement that makes an already elegant design even more enjoyable to use.

A Mechanical Pencil Made to Be Kept
There is a growing appreciation for buying fewer things, but choosing them more carefully.
A handmade metal mechanical pencil represents an entirely different philosophy from the disposable plastic stationery that has become commonplace.
Rather than treating a pencil as something temporary, we believe it should be an object worth looking after.
An instrument that acquires meaning through use. One that becomes familiar in the hand, accompanies new ideas and gradually becomes part of its owner’s daily routine.
The Nicholas Hemingway Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil reflects this belief in considered, enduring design.
By combining traditional hand craftsmanship with the remarkable properties of titanium and aluminium, we have created a writing instrument intended to be appreciated long beyond the novelty of a new purchase.
A pencil to use, to maintain and to enjoy.
Not simply to replace.
A Thoughtful Gift for Those Who Appreciate Fine Writing Instruments
Some of the best gifts are objects people might not ordinarily buy for themselves, but come to appreciate every single day.
A handmade titanium mechanical pencil is just such an object.
For an architect, designer, engineer, illustrator, artist, writer or devoted stationery enthusiast, it offers a thoughtful combination of practicality and understated luxury.
Its lightweight construction also makes it an interesting choice for those who already own a heavier metal mechanical pencil and would appreciate something noticeably lighter in the hand.
It is equally appealing to collectors of fine writing instruments and anyone who enjoys beautifully engineered everyday objects.
More personal than ordinary stationery, more useful than something purely decorative, it is a gift that invites its owner to create.
To draw. To write. To think. To make something.
And perhaps, in a world increasingly dominated by screens, to rediscover the uncomplicated pleasure of graphite on paper.
The Nicholas Hemingway Philosophy – Beauty Engineered Simply
The story behind every Nicholas Hemingway writing instrument is rooted in a family appreciation of engineering, design and the written word.
Inspired by his grandfather’s craftsmanship and the traditional engineering skills passed down through his family, Nicholas began creating mechanical pencils with a simple ambition: to make the kind of writing instruments he would genuinely love to own and use.
That ambition continues to shape the collection today.
Our pencils are not designed around passing trends or unnecessary complexity. They are designed around materials, proportions, craftsmanship and the intimate relationship between a person and the tools they use.
This new Lightweight Titanium Mechanical Pencil is another expression of that philosophy.
A change of material in one small component. A reduction of just 2.5 grams. A subtle but noticeable improvement in the hand.
It is a reminder that good engineering is not always about making something more complicated.
Sometimes it is simply about knowing what to leave out, what to change and when to stop.
A celebration of beautifully simple engineering, handmade British craftsmanship and the enduring pleasure of writing by hand.
