Bog Oak Mechanical Pencil
Immerse yourself in history with the Nicholas Hemingway Bog Oak Mechanical Pencil. This extraordinary pencil is crafted from ancient English oak, over 5,100 years old, transforming a piece of history into a functional piece of art.
Ancient Craftsmanship
Nicholas Hemingway crafts each pencil from oak that predates the Pyramids of Giza by 600 years. Because the wood is preserved in ancient peat bogs, it remains protected from decay and the ravages of time. Consequently, this preservation process gives bog oak its deep, dark hue and incredible density, making each pencil truly unique.
Expert Construction
Designed for precision and versatility, this pencil is perfect for writing, drawing, and sketching. The body, showcasing the natural beauty of ancient oak, is complemented by elegant brass fittings that add durability and sophistication. Moreover, skilled craftsmen meticulously hand-build each pencil, ensuring a smooth and comfortable grip ideal for extended use.
Timeless Aesthetics
The combination of ancient bog oak and brass creates a stunning visual contrast, enhancing the pencil’s timeless appeal. Additionally, the sleek, ergonomic design makes it a pleasure to hold and use. Available in lead options of 0.3mm, 0.5mm, 0.7mm, and 0.9mm, it delivers bold, consistent lines for detailed work and expressive sketches.
Unique Gift Idea
Presented in a beautifully crafted gift box, the Bog Oak Mechanical Pencil is an extraordinary gift for history enthusiasts, artists, designers, and anyone who appreciates fine craftsmanship. Furthermore, its unique origin and story add to its character and timelessness.
Formation of Bog Oak
Bog oak refers to oak that has been buried in peat bogs for hundreds or even thousands of years. Because the low oxygen levels and acidic environment protect the wood from typical decay, it remains preserved. Over time, iron salts and other minerals react with the natural tannins in the wood, darkening it to a deep brown or nearly black colour. Thus, the most common source of bog oak is English Oak, frequently found in the United Kingdom.

Love the real wood aspect of this pencil, lighter than expected but feels good to write with.

Having a 5100 years old real wood mechanic pencil in your hand is absolutely invaluable feeling. I am greatly appreciated. 5100 years is too long according to a regular human being lifespan . Great feeling. Thanks a lot.

Two things keep this from being perfect, from my point of view. (1) I wish it were rather heavier. Mine’s 10g. I wish it were twice that. (2) I wish away the signature on the barrel. Part of my love of this brand is the austere plainness of the products; the sig interferes with that aesthetic. ¶ It’s still a great instrument, and the price is excellent.

The Nicholas Hemingway 5,100-Year-Old Bog Oak Mechanical Pencil is a truly unique addition to my collection and the second pencil I’ve bought from them. Made from ancient English bog oak, it feels like holding a piece of history in your hand. The dark, dense wood combined with elegant brass fittings makes it both stylish and functional. Using it daily is a joy. Just like with my first purchase, the customer service was superb and personal, making the whole experience even better.

I got a set of these in the Kickstarter campaign.
As all Nicholas’s pencils are, these are beautifully well made, but they they add to that a reminder of the wonder and mysteries of our distant past that make them truly special to own and use. A little wider than the other wood bodied pens I think, they will suit well those who prefer a broader pencil, but they are as beautifully made as all Nicholas’s pencils are.
